Overview

Gas lines for standby generators: an overview

A standby generator is only as reliable as its fuel supply. At full load it can use a lot of gas, so the line feeding it has to be sized for the distance, the pressure and the demand of the unit, plus everything else in the home that runs on gas at the same time.

Undersized piping or an undersized meter can cause a generator to struggle or shut down right when you need it. That’s why fuel planning is part of every Kelm generator job, not an afterthought handed to a separate contractor.

Clint Kelm is a Texas Master Plumber (Responsible Master Plumber, RMPL #41051) and holds an RRC LP-Gas plumber exemption (EXE-0016376). That lets Kelm plan and install the fuel side of a generator project, whether your home is on natural gas or uses an LP-gas tank.

FAQ

Gas Lines for Generators FAQ

Common questions about this service.

Is propane or natural gas better?

Natural gas is convenient where available because it doesn’t need refilling. LP-gas works anywhere but needs a tank sized for how long you want to run. We’ll help you weigh it.

How big of an LP-gas tank do I need?

It depends on the generator, how many hours you want to run and how often the tank can be refilled. We’ll talk through realistic run times.

Do you work with my gas utility?

We help coordinate when a meter upgrade or new service is needed.

What if I smell gas?

Leave the area, avoid switches and flames, and call your gas utility or 911 from a safe place.
