Generator service and repair
Diagnostics, alarm codes, repairs, parts and warranty work for Generac and Kohler standby generators, from a certified dealer that also installs them.
Generator service and repair: an overview
A standby generator spends most of its life waiting. When it’s finally called on, usually in the middle of a storm, every part of the system has to work: the battery, the controller, the engine, the fuel supply and the transfer switch. Service and repair is about finding the weak link before that moment, or fixing it fast when it shows up.
Kelm Home Services is a certified Generac and Kohler dealer, and Clint Kelm has installed and serviced standby generators since 2005. Service calls start with diagnostics, not guesses: we read the controller’s alarm history, check the battery and charger, look at the fuel supply, inspect the engine and test the transfer switch. Then we tell you what we found and what it takes to fix.
Because Kelm holds both electrical and plumbing licenses, a problem that turns out to be in the wiring, the transfer switch or the gas line doesn’t get bounced to another company. If your unit is under manufacturer warranty, we can help with warranty service as a certified dealer, subject to the manufacturer’s terms.
If you have a brand other than Generac or Kohler, call and tell us what you have. We’ll be straight with you about whether it’s something we can help with.
What’s included
What this work typically covers. Your scope depends on your home and equipment.
Diagnostics
Controller alarm history, battery and charger tests, engine checks and fuel-supply checks.
Alarm and error codes
We read and interpret the codes your controller or monitoring app is showing, then trace the cause.
Repairs and parts
Starting, charging, fuel, ignition, sensor and controller issues repaired with the right parts for your unit.
Warranty work
As a certified Generac and Kohler dealer, we can help with warranty claims and repairs under the manufacturer’s terms.
Storm and outage service
When storms are coming or the power is already out, call us. Monitoring plan customers don’t even have to call: Kelm is notified of faults and sends a technician.
Transfer switch service
Switches that won’t transfer, won’t return to utility or show faults are diagnosed and repaired.

Call for service if your generator…
- Shows a red alarm or a warning on the controller or app
- Didn’t run its scheduled exercise
- Won’t start, or starts and shuts down
- Runs but the house stays on utility power, or stays dark
- Has a weak or old battery, oil leaks or unusual noises
- Was exposed to flooding, storm debris or high water

Generator Service & Repair FAQ
Common questions about this service.
My generator shows a code. Is it safe to run?
It depends on the code. Some are maintenance reminders; others shut the unit down to protect it. Call us with the code and we’ll tell you what it means and whether to leave it off.
Do you only fix units you installed?
No. We service Generac and Kohler standby generators whether or not Kelm installed them.
Is my repair covered by warranty?
That depends on the unit’s age, registration and the manufacturer’s warranty terms. As a certified dealer we can check coverage and help with the claim.
Can you come during a storm?
Yes. We send technicians during storms and outages as soon as it’s safe to travel; during a hurricane, road and weather conditions set the timing. The best protection is a tune-up before the season starts.
Why did my generator fail after sitting all year?
Common reasons are weak batteries, missed maintenance, fuel-supply issues and pests or debris in the enclosure. Regular maintenance and monitoring catch most of these early.
